Mitochondrial Genetics
Mitochondrial genetics is the study of the genetics of the mitochondria, which are the organelles within cells that produce energy. Research in mitochondrial genetics is important because mitochondria account for approximately 90% of a cell’s energy production. Defects in mitochondrial DNA can cause a wide range of diseases, including mitochondrial diseases, cancer, and neurological disorders. By studying mitochondrial genetics, scientists are able to better understand the role of mitochondria in health and disease. This knowledge can then be used to develop new treatments and therapies for mitochondrial diseases, as well as to develop methods to prevent and diagnose various conditions.
