Overview

Respiratory Diseases are conditions affecting the organs of breathing, encompassing the upper airways, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, pleura, and respiratory musculature. They are broadly classified as obstructive (asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchitis), restrictive and interstitial, infectious (pneumonia, tuberculosis, influenza), allergic, and vascular, and arise from infection, allergen and pollutant exposure, tobacco and vaping, occupational hazards, and immune or structural abnormalities. Clinical assessment combines symptom evaluation with pulmonary function testing such as spirometry, exhaled nitric oxide measurement, nasal and bronchoalveolar cytology, imaging, and microbiological confirmation. The studies gathered here illustrate these themes through multidisciplinary diagnosis of allergic and non-allergic disease using nasal cytology and fractional exhaled nitric oxide, spirometric evaluation of people living with HIV, mortality profiling within a pneumophthisiology service, the cardiovascular and respiratory effects of involuntary smoking and vaping, second-hand smoke knowledge and attitudes, zoonotic influenza, and Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia in children. They span allergy, infection, environmental and behavioural risk, and outcomes across varied populations and health systems. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on the pathophysiology, diagnosis, epidemiology, prevention, and management of disorders of the respiratory system.
