Overview

Chronic Diseases are long-lasting health conditions that persist for months, years, or a lifetime and generally progress or require ongoing management over time. They include conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, cancer, chronic kidney and liver disease, and respiratory disorders, and they are often linked to a combination of genetic, lifestyle, environmental, and dietary factors. Because they can lead to lasting disability and contribute substantially to mortality, the prevention, early diagnosis, and sustained management of chronic Diseases are central concerns for both individual and public health. Research relevant to chronic disease spans many conditions and care settings. Studies have examined the magnitude and trends of chronic liver disease in a hospital population, serum hepcidin levels in anemia associated with chronic kidney disease, the drivers of and barriers to medication adherence among patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia, and chronic pain experienced years after lung transplantation, alongside work on health insurance coverage and out-of-pocket spending affecting long-term care. These lines of work address the burden, mechanisms, and management of conditions that require sustained attention. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to chronic disease and its diagnosis, treatment, and management.
