Overview

Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GISTs) are rare, malignant tumors that form in the digestive system. They most commonly occur in the stomach or small intestine, but can also be found in the esophagus, colon, and rectum. GISTs are typically slow growing and can sometimes go unnoticed for many years, making them difficult to diagnose. Treatment for GISTs typically includes surgery, chemotherapy, and/or targeted therapies that focus on specific genetic mutations that drive tumor growth. Early diagnosis and treatment of GISTs is important for the long-term prognosis of the patient.
