Biliary System
The biliary system is a critical organ system that is responsible for transporting bile from the liver to the small intestine, enabling digestion and absorption of fats and other essential vitamins and minerals. In addition, it helps regulate the composition of the bile, an important function for maintaining the balance of body fluids. Composed of the gallbladder, a duct connecting the gallbladder to the small intestine, and bile ducts, this system is essential for the body's digestive process. Malfunction of the biliary system can lead to a variety of diseases, including gallstones, pancreatitis, and liver cancer. It is also implicated in conditions such as jaundice, which is a yellow discoloration of the skin caused by an accumulation of bile pigments in the liver. Proper care and maintenance of the biliary system is essential for overall health and wellbeing.
