Overview

Tandem mass spectrometry, abbreviated MS/MS, is an analytical technique that uses two or more stages of mass analysis to identify and quantify molecules within complex mixtures. In a typical experiment, a first analyser selects ions of a particular mass-to-charge ratio, those selected ions are fragmented, usually by collision with a neutral gas, and a second analyser measures the masses of the resulting fragments. The fragmentation pattern serves as a structural fingerprint, providing far greater specificity than a single mass measurement and allowing closely related or trace-level compounds to be distinguished. MS/MS is often coupled to liquid or gas chromatography, which separates components before they enter the spectrometer, and it underpins applications across proteomics, metabolomics, clinical diagnostics, pharmacology, food safety, and environmental analysis.
