Overview
An epidermoid cyst is a benign, closed sac under the skin that contains a cheese-like material, made up of dead skin cells and keratin. They are non-cancerous and most commonly occur on the face, scalp, neck, and upper back. In most cases, epidermoid cysts do not cause pain or discomfort, but if they become large or become inflamed or infected, they may require removal. Treatment of an epidermoid cyst typically involves surgical removal of the cyst and the contents. This is typically done as an outpatient procedure, where the cyst is cut out and its contents are removed. The removal of an epidermoid cyst is important because if left untreated, it may lead to infection, pain, or even cancer.
