Prevention of Depression
Prevention of depression is a key component of mental health promotion and wellbeing. It is often seen as a two-pronged approach, focusing on reducing factors associated with developing depression through individual approaches, such as cognitive behavioural therapy, and intervening in known risk factors, such as substance abuse, social isolation and unhealthy lifestyle habits. Implementing prevention strategies such as these enable early intervention and support, reducing the burden of depression on individuals, society and the health care system. Prevention strategies are critical in order to address the increasing numbers of people experiencing depression, who may be at risk for recurrent episodes and long-term disability associated with mental illness. Additionally, prevention strategies are important for reducing the disparities in mental health outcomes, especially for vulnerable and underrepresented populations.
