Overview

Bipolar disorder is a chronic mood disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of pathologically elevated mood, mania or hypomania, alternating with episodes of depression. Manic episodes feature heightened energy, reduced need for sleep, grandiosity, impulsivity, and impaired judgment, while depressive episodes bring low mood, anhedonia, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating; the pattern and severity distinguish bipolar I, bipolar II, and related presentations. The disorder typically emerges in early adulthood, follows a relapsing-remitting course, and is associated with significant functional impairment and elevated suicide risk. Its etiology involves strong genetic predisposition together with neurobiological and psychosocial influences, and management combines mood-stabilizing and other pharmacotherapy with psychosocial and psychoeducational interventions that support recovery and relapse prevention. Research relevant to this area examines psychosocial factors and comorbidity associated with recovery in bipolar disorder, psychosocial interventions in bipolar disorder, rumination-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy, the relationship between religion and mental health, antidepressant-like neuropeptide activity, mental-health burdens among vulnerable populations, and combined therapy for depressed patients with pain. The journal publishes peer-reviewed studies on the diagnosis, course, neurobiology, and treatment of bipolar disorder, including pharmacological mood stabilization, psychosocial and psychotherapeutic interventions, and the factors shaping recovery and long-term outcome.
