Overview

Avoidant Personality Disorder (AVPD) is a psychological disorder characterized by a pervasive pattern of social anxiety, hypersensitivity to rejection, and feelings of inferiority. People with AVPD are often afraid of being judged or rejected by others, and may try to avoid social situations or activities. Symptoms of AVPD can include intense shyness, fear of criticism and embarrassment, difficulty establishing close relationships, and low self-esteem. AVPD can interfere with an individual’s ability to function in social and occupational settings, and can cause significant distress. Treatments for AVPD typically involve psychotherapy and medications to help alleviate symptoms. With appropriate treatment, individuals with AVPD can learn to manage their symptoms and lead more fulfilling lives.
