Overview

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is a dental procedure used to save a tooth whose inner pulp has become infected or inflamed, typically as a result of deep decay, repeated dental work, cracks, or trauma. During treatment, the diseased pulp is removed from the pulp chamber and root canals, the spaces are cleaned, shaped, and disinfected, and they are then filled and sealed, after which the tooth is usually restored with a filling or crown. The procedure relieves pain, eliminates infection, and allows a natural tooth to be retained rather than extracted, preserving function and the surrounding bone. Precise instrumentation of the canals is central to success, and complications can arise if instruments separate within a canal. The journal Dentistry And Oral Implants publishes peer-reviewed research on dental treatment, oral surgery, and restorative care. Relevant work in this collection includes a case report of inferior alveolar nerve paraesthesia caused by a broken endodontic instrument and a report of flapless root resection, both illustrating the technical considerations involved in endodontic and root-related procedures. This page gathers open-access scholarship relevant to root canal treatment and endodontic care, supporting evidence-based understanding of how diseased teeth are diagnosed, treated, and preserved.
