Overview

Dental trauma refers to injuries affecting the teeth and their supporting structures, including the periodontal ligament, alveolar bone, and surrounding soft tissues, typically resulting from falls, collisions, sports, road traffic incidents, or interpersonal violence. Injuries are classified according to the tissues involved and the nature of the damage, ranging from enamel and crown fractures and crown-root fractures to luxations, in which a tooth is displaced within or partly out of its socket, and avulsion, the complete displacement of a tooth. Associated injuries to the alveolar bone, lips, and adjacent maxillofacial structures are common in higher-energy trauma, and protective measures such as helmet use influence the pattern and severity of facial and dental injury. Management depends on the type and extent of injury and the maturity of the tooth, and may include repositioning and splinting, pulpal assessment and endodontic care, restorative repair, and, where teeth are lost, replacement options including autotransplantation or prosthetic and implant-supported solutions. Timely and appropriate intervention is critical, because delayed or inadequate treatment can lead to pulp necrosis, root resorption, ankylosis, and tooth loss. Accurate diagnosis, often supported by clinical and radiographic examination, together with structured follow-up, underpins the preservation of injured teeth and the restoration of function and aesthetics after dental trauma.
