Overview

Dental science, or dentistry, is the branch of medicine concerned with the structure, function, health, and treatment of the teeth, gums, jaws, and associated oral tissues. It encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, and management of oral disease, as well as the restoration and replacement of teeth through techniques that include dental implants, prosthetics, periodontal therapy, and oral and maxillofacial surgery. The field is important because oral health is integral to overall health, nutrition, speech, and quality of life, and restorative and surgical approaches can rehabilitate function and appearance after tooth loss or disease.
