Senescence

Senescence is the biological process of aging, in which older organisms experience age-related functional and structural changes leading to increased mortality. A major factor contributing to senescence is the accumulation of molecular damage, as organisms age and their cells encounter increasingly greater levels of oxidative stress. Senescence is an important factor driving the aging process, and can also contribute to the onset of age-related diseases. Its study facilitates the development of treatments that can potentially slow the progression of aging and its associated diseases, as well as enhance our understanding of the underlying biology of aging.
