Viruses

Viruses are infectious particles composed of genetic material in a protective protein coat. They can cause illnesses ranging from the common cold to more serious illnesses, such as AIDS and Ebola. Viruses are significant as they are the most abundant life-form on earth and are responsible for many serious yet treatable illnesses. As well, various viruses can be utilized as gene-carrying vectors for the development of new treatments for diseases, in a process known as gene therapy. Viruses are also used in the production of vaccines, which are used to immunize individuals against specific illnesses.
