Infectious Diseases Hiv Infection and Aids
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a virus that causes an immunodeficiency syndrome called Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). HIV infection is a serious global health issue and is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. In over 200 countries and territories, many are living with HIV infection. HIV weakens a person's immune system by destroying important cells that help fight disease and infection, making them more likely to get other infections and some types of cancer. HIV is spread through contact with certain body fluids from an infected person, such as blood, semen, rectal fluids, and breast milk. There is currently no cure for HIV infection, however, early diagnosis combined with antiretroviral therapy (ART) have been effective in controlling the viral infection and assisting people with HIV to live long, healthy and productive lives. Prevention strategies include testing and counselling, education and awareness, and making sure to use protection during sexual activities.
