Overview
Human immunodeficiency virus type 2 (HIV-2) is a virus that infects humans and causes AIDS. It is closely related to HIV-1 and is responsible for approximately 5-10% of AIDS cases worldwide. HIV-2 is found primarily in West Africa, where it was initially detected in 1986. It is spread through contact with infected bodily fluids, such as through sexual intercourse or injection drug use. HIV-2 infection is treatable with anti-retroviral drugs, but is typically more difficult to treat than HIV-1. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential for reducing the risk of serious health complications, including AIDS. HIV-2 is an important public health issue and preventing its spread is a key goal of public health efforts.
