Overview

Transport phenomena are a set of applied scientific principles used to analyze and describe the behavior of fluids, heat, and mass in various systems. The study of transport phenomena is essential in understanding how matter and energy are transferred from one point to another within a system. The three key transport phenomena are fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and mass transfer. Fluid mechanics is the study of the movement and deformation of fluids. It involves the analysis of the behavior of fluids at rest (called hydrostatics) or in motion (called hydrodynamics). Fluid mechanics plays a crucial role in the design of many industrial processes, such as the flow of fluids through pipes, pumps, and heat exchangers. Heat transfer is the study of the movement of thermal energy between two or more objects. Heat can be transferred by conduction, convection, or radiation. Understanding heat transfer is important in designing systems that require temperature control, such as heat exchangers, refrigeration systems, and thermal insulation. Mass transfer is the study of the transport of mass within a system. It involves the movement of chemical species from a high concentration to a low concentration, typically driven by a concentration gradient. Mass transfer is used in many different applications, including chemical reactors, separation systems, and biological processes. Overall, transport phenomena are essential in many fields of science and engineering, including chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, and materials science. By understanding the principles of transport phenomena, researchers and engineers can design more efficient and effective systems that have a wide range of practical applications.
