Overview

Rectal cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the cells of the rectum, the last several inches of the large intestine. It is the third most common type of cancer in the United States. The earlier it is diagnosed and treated, the better the chances for successful treatment. Early detection is key, as symptoms may not appear until the cancer is advanced. Possible treatments may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or a combination of these treatments. Screening tests, such as a colonoscopy, may help to detect the cancer early and improve outcomes.
