Plant Genetics
Plant genetics is the study of genetic variation in plants. It encompasses the effects of variations in genotype and phenotype on plant growth, development and responses to environmental conditions. Plant genetics has a significant impact on the production of food, feed, fiber, fuel and medicine. By understanding the genetics behind plants, breeders are able to create crops with higher yields, improved nutrient content, enhanced pest and disease resistance, and better environmental adaptation. In addition, plant genetics provides insight into the evolution of plant species and the genetic basis for population structure and species diversity. Ultimately, it helps us to protect and develop our agricultural resources for the future.
