Overview

Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have a negative effect on health. It is estimated that 39.8% of the adult population in the United States are obese. Obesity is associated with increased risk of many chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery disease, stroke, gallbladder disease, and some forms of cancer. Treatment for obesity involves lifestyle modifications such as increased physical activity and improved dietary habits. Weight loss medications may be used in some cases to help achieve and maintain a healthy weight.
