Overview

Minimally invasive colorectal surgery is a group of surgical techniques used to treat diseases of the colon and rectum through small incisions or natural orifices rather than a large open incision. It includes laparoscopic surgery, in which a camera and specialised instruments are passed through several small ports in the abdominal wall, and robot-assisted surgery, which gives the surgeon enhanced visualisation and dexterity. These approaches are used to manage conditions such as colorectal cancer, diverticular disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and benign tumours and polyps. Compared with traditional open surgery, minimally invasive techniques generally offer reduced blood loss, less postoperative pain, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery, while aiming to achieve equivalent surgical and, in cancer, oncological outcomes. Their success depends on careful patient selection, surgical expertise, and appropriate imaging and instrumentation. As part of the broader management of colorectal disease, these surgical methods complement screening, diagnosis, and adjuvant treatment in the care of patients with colon and rectal conditions. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to colorectal disease and its surgical and diagnostic management.
