Overview

Genetics and genomics are the study of genes and DNA, respectively, and how they affect the characteristics of plants and plant growth. Plant genetics and gene expression is the study of how these genes and DNA sequences produce the traits and functions of plants. It is a rapidly growing field with many applications, ranging from creating genetically modified organisms (GMOs) with desirable traits, such as disease and pest resistance, to understanding the underlying mechanisms of drought and climate change effects on plants. By understanding the genetic architecture of plants, researchers can better understand and design interventions to create varieties of plants that are uniquely suited to their environment. Furthermore, the advances in plant genetics and gene expression have far-reaching implications for crop and food security, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable agricultural development.
