Overview

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are rare, cancerous tumors that form in the gastrointestinal tract (stomach, small intestine, rectum, and large intestine), most commonly in the stomach. GISTs are the most common type of soft tissue sarcoma, and the majority are determined to be of the low-risk variety. Although the exact cause of GISTs is unknown, research suggests that they may have a genetic component. Treatment for GISTs typically depends on the type, size, and location of the tumor. The most common treatments for GISTs are surgery, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy. GISTs are important to study because of their relatively high prevalence among soft tissue sarcomas, and because they can be treated effectively when diagnosed early. Understanding the cause and treatment of GISTs helps people with the condition to make informed decisions about their health.
