Colorectal Cancer Treatment
Colorectal cancer is the cancer of the colon and/or rectum and is one of the most common cancers in the western world. Early diagnosis and timely treatment are essential for an improved prognosis and survival rates of people suffering from this type of cancer. Treatment options for colorectal cancer include surgical procedures, chemotherapy, radiation, and targeted therapies. By surgically removing the tumor, along with surrounding tissue and lymph nodes, surgery is often the preferred initial treatment for colorectal cancer. Chemotherapy is used to kill cancer cells and can be used before or after surgery. Radiation therapy is used to shrink tumors and can be used before or after surgery. Targeted therapies are designed to block signals in cancer cells that allow them to grow, and can be administered with other forms of treatment. Proper treatment can significantly improve the chances of reducing or eliminating the cancer and increasing life expectancy.
