Overview
Colorectal cancer, also known as bowel cancer, is an often life-threatening disease that develops in the intestine. Prognosis and treatment of this cancer depend on the stage of cancer at diagnosis. Early diagnosis is crucial in order to improve prognosis, and there are a variety of tests used to diagnose and predict the outcome of colorectal cancer. These tests include physical exams, imaging tests, and a variety of laboratory tests such as those measuring cancer markers. With the help of these tests, physicians are able to make an informed decision on the best prognosis and treatment options for the patient. When done early, the prognosis of colorectal cancer can be very positive, even if the cancer is found at an advanced stage. Early diagnosis is also important in minimizing the risk of cancer recurrence.
