Yaws
Yaws is a bacterial infection caused by the spirochete, Treponema pallidum. It is most commonly found in tropical and sub-tropical countries and affects mainly children under the age of 15 years. Yaws is mainly spread by direct contact with the infected person's skin, especially in warm and humid conditions. It can also be transmitted through contact with contaminated objects, such as clothing, drinking utensils, etc. The symptoms of Yaws include skin lesions, fever, swollen lymph nodes and bone damage. It can also lead to serious complications if left untreated. Treatment involves antibiotics and topical medications. Yaws can be prevented by maintaining proper hygiene and avoiding contact with individuals suspected of having this infection. Yaws is a serious public health issue and proper diagnosis and treatment are important for its control.
