Overview

Prevention of HIV/AIDS encompasses the strategies and interventions used to stop transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which attacks the immune system and, if untreated, can progress to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Because HIV spreads through unprotected sexual contact, sharing of contaminated needles, and from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding, prevention relies on a combination of behavioural, biomedical and educational measures, including condom use, testing, counselling and risk-reduction programmes. Research on HIV/AIDS prevention emphasizes behaviour, awareness and the design of interventions, particularly among young and at-risk populations. Studies in this journal's corpus examine the psychosocial predictors of sexual abstinence among students, sexual risk behaviours among sex workers, and knowledge, perceptions and preventive lifestyles relating to HIV/AIDS in educational and community settings. Other work addresses HIV prevention and risk-reduction intervention programmes for in-school adolescents, consistent condom use among HIV-positive women, the use of sport as a vehicle for prevention, and factors influencing HIV status disclosure. Related articles consider attitudes toward HIV counselling and testing and the theoretical frameworks useful for working with people living with HIV and AIDS. Together these aspects span health education, behavioural risk reduction, testing and counselling, and the social determinants that shape effective prevention.
