Overview

HIV status refers to whether a person has tested positive or negative for human immunodeficiency virus, the retrovirus that progressively weakens the immune system by destroying CD4 T cells and, untreated, can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Knowing one's HIV status through voluntary counselling and testing is a cornerstone of prevention and care, because it determines eligibility for antiretroviral therapy, informs decisions about transmission risk, and shapes reproductive and partner-related choices. The disclosure of HIV status, whether to sexual partners, family members, or children living with the virus, is a sensitive social and clinical process with implications for adherence, stigma, and psychosocial wellbeing. Within this area the journal publishes peer-reviewed research on the factors influencing status disclosure among people living with HIV and on disclosing a diagnosis to infected children and adolescents receiving antiretroviral treatment, drawing on studies across sub-Saharan Africa and other settings. Related work examines serodiscordant and seropositive couples, condom use and consistent prevention behaviours, pre-exposure prophylaxis awareness, sexual risk among key populations, and attitudes toward premarital counselling and testing. Together these topics situate HIV status within the broader epidemiology, behavioural science, and public-health response to the epidemic.
