Hiv-associated Pruritus

HIV-associated pruritus is an especially bothersome and uncomfortable symptom of HIV infection. It causes an intense, itching sensation on the skin, and is caused by a wide range of underlying conditions, including infections, dry skin, complications of HIV medications, among others. Pruritus is a very distressing condition, and can significantly affect a patient’s quality of life. Treatment for HIV-associated pruritus is focused on controlling the underlying causes and providing relief from the symptoms. Various medications, topical creams and other therapies, such as phototherapy, can be used to alleviate the itching sensation. Pruritus can often become a long-term problem, so early and active management is essential in order to reduce the risk of complications and improve a patient's quality of life.
