Overview

HIV/AIDS and sexual health is a field of public health concerned with the prevention, transmission, and management of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in the context of sexual behaviour and wellbeing. HIV is spread through contact with certain infected bodily fluids, frequently during unprotected sex, and untreated infection progressively weakens the immune system, leaving the body vulnerable to opportunistic infections. Because sexual transmission is a principal route of HIV spread, sexual health education, safer-sex practices, condom use, counselling, and testing are central to prevention. Effective responses depend on knowledge, attitudes, and practices within populations, and they intersect with broader sexual and reproductive health concerns, including other sexually transmitted infections and the needs of adolescents and young people. Research examines the determinants of protective behaviour, the design and reach of prevention programmes, and the social and cultural factors that shape risk. The journal publishes peer-reviewed studies relevant to these themes, including psychosocial predictors of sexual abstinence among secondary-school students, knowledge and preventive lifestyle practices against HIV/AIDS in tertiary institutions, awareness and attitudes toward premarital HIV counselling and testing, HIV prevention among in-school and rural adolescents, sexual risk behaviours among sex workers, determinants of consistent condom use, and factors influencing HIV status disclosure.
