Overview

HIV/AIDS and reproductive health describes the intersection of human immunodeficiency virus infection with sexual and reproductive well-being, including prevention, counseling, family planning, pregnancy, and the social dimensions of living with HIV. Because HIV is frequently transmitted sexually and from mother to child, reproductive health services and HIV prevention are closely interconnected. This field examines how knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors shape HIV transmission and prevention, particularly among adolescents, young adults, and other vulnerable groups. Core topics include awareness and uptake of HIV counseling and testing, consistent condom use, sexual abstinence and risk-reduction interventions, and the prevention of mother-to-child transmission, including the management of serodiscordant couples in which only one partner is HIV-positive. The disclosure of HIV status, the psychosocial and theoretical frameworks that guide support for people living with HIV, and the long-term health and disability outcomes of those on antiretroviral therapy are also central concerns. Research published in this journal reflects these themes through studies of in-school adolescents, secondary-school students, pregnant women, truck drivers, and other populations across sub-Saharan Africa and beyond, alongside work on health-status disclosure, behavior-change theory, and community-level prevention strategies such as sport-based outreach.
