Overview
HIV/AIDS is a serious infectious disease caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), an advanced stage of the infection. HIV/AIDS disproportionately affects certain populations, such as racial and ethnic minorities, and is linked to healthcare disparities which can put these groups at risk for poorer health outcomes. It is important to understand how these disparities manifest and the factors that lead to them in order to ensure that these populations receive the necessary education and support to get quality healthcare and to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS. Healthcare professionals, researchers, and policy makers can use this understanding to develop strategies and programs to promote health equity among those vulnerable to HIV/AIDS.
