Overview

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus that affects the human immune system, leading to developing AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). HIV is spread mainly through sexual contact, sharing of needles and syringes, and mother-to-child transmission. HIV weakens the body’s ability to fight off illness, making the person more vulnerable to a wide range of infections and cancers. There is currently no cure for HIV, but there are treatments available to help those affected manage the virus and lead mostly healthy, normal lives. Early diagnosis and treatment is essential for the best outcome for people with HIV. Experts recommend that all individuals at risk or with symptoms of an infection get tested for HIV.
