The causes and symptoms of HIV concern the aetiology and clinical manifestations of human immunodeficiency virus infection. The cause is the retrovirus itself, transmitted through specific routes: unprotected sexual contact, exposure to infected blood including shared injecting equipment, and vertical passage from mother to child during pregnancy, delivery, or breastfeeding. After acquisition, many individuals experience an acute retroviral syndrome with fever, fatigue, lymphadenopathy, and rash, followed by a prolonged clinically latent phase during which progressive depletion of CD4 T-lymphocytes occurs largely without symptoms. As immunity declines, constitutional features, recurrent infections, neurological complications, and opportunistic conditions emerge, marking advance toward AIDS. Recognising this trajectory underpins early testing, diagnosis, and treatment.
