Overview

The causes and symptoms of HIV concern the aetiology and clinical manifestations of human immunodeficiency virus infection. The cause is the retrovirus itself, transmitted through specific routes: unprotected sexual contact, exposure to infected blood including shared injecting equipment, and vertical passage from mother to child during pregnancy, delivery, or breastfeeding. After acquisition, many individuals experience an acute retroviral syndrome with fever, fatigue, lymphadenopathy, and rash, followed by a prolonged clinically latent phase during which progressive depletion of CD4 T-lymphocytes occurs largely without symptoms. As immunity declines, constitutional features, recurrent infections, neurological complications, and opportunistic conditions emerge, marking advance toward AIDS. Recognising this trajectory underpins early testing, diagnosis, and treatment. The research grouped here documents clinical manifestations and associated conditions in infected populations, including HIV-associated peripheral neuropathy, cryptococcal meningitis and its biomarkers, conjunctival and other opportunistic disease, cardiovascular and ischaemic risk factors, physical and depressive symptom profiles in perinatal women, disability and long-term health outcomes, and socio-demographic patterns of HIV occurrence. The journal publishes peer-reviewed studies that characterise the clinical features, comorbidities, and progression of HIV infection, informing recognition, diagnosis, and management across varied patient populations and settings.
