Antiretroviral Treatment
Antiretroviral (ARV) treatment is a combination of medications used to manage and treat Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection. ARV drugs inhibit the replication of HIV and can reduce the amount of virus in the blood/body to undetectable levels, as well as decrease the risk of transmitting the virus to others. ARV treatment has been credited with drastically reducing the mortality rates associated with HIV. It can be used in both adults and children, and has been shown to reduce mother-to-child transmission of the virus. ARV treatment can help restore the patient’s immune system and improve the quality of life for HIV-positive individuals. ARV therapy is essential in managing HIV and should be taken as prescribed.
