Overview

AIDS-associated disorders are the conditions that arise from, or are aggravated by, infection with the human immunodeficiency virus as it progressively depletes CD4 T-lymphocytes and weakens cell-mediated immunity. As immune function declines, susceptibility rises to opportunistic infections such as tuberculosis, Pneumocystis pneumonia, and meningitis, and to HIV-associated malignancies, alongside non-infectious complications affecting the nervous, cardiovascular, renal, and skeletal systems. The spectrum extends from mucocutaneous manifestations to severe organ involvement and includes metabolic and bone disorders such as osteoporosis and reduced bone mineral density, neurocognitive impairment, and psychosocial sequelae. Some complications reflect the direct effects of the virus and chronic immune activation, while others result from the long-term toxicity of antiretroviral therapy, including effects on cellular aging and telomerase function. Effective antiretroviral treatment restores immunity and prevents most opportunistic disease, shifting the clinical burden toward chronic comorbidities and the consequences of long-term therapy. Research relevant to this area examines the patterns and adverse effects of antiretroviral regimens, osteoporosis and its correlation with CD4 count and disease stage in HIV-infected patients, disability and health outcomes in people on long-term treatment, and nucleoside-analogue effects on aging. The journal publishes peer-reviewed studies on the complications, comorbidities, and treatment-related disorders associated with HIV and AIDS.
