Overview

Nursing practice is the application of nursing knowledge, skills, and professional judgement to promote, maintain, and restore health in individuals, families, and communities. Encompassing direct patient care, education, advocacy, and coordination, it is grounded in the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation, and aims to help patients reach their highest attainable level of health and well-being. Practice settings range from acute and intensive care to community and home environments, and the field embraces holistic approaches that attend to the physical, psychological, and social dimensions of the person rather than disease alone, as reflected in holistic nursing applied within intensive care. Theoretical foundations, such as contextual action theory, provide frameworks for understanding how nurses interpret situations and act within them, while the organisation of care, including collaboration with unlicensed assistive personnel and within multidisciplinary teams, shapes how practice is delivered safely and effectively. Workforce factors such as registered-nurse turnover influence continuity and quality of care, linking the conditions of practice to patient outcomes. Research relevant to this topic examines nursing theory, holistic and intensive care, team-based working, and patient-centred support such as care for women in early labour, underpinning evidence-based, person-focused practice across the continuum of health services.
