Overview

Nursing homes are residential facilities that provide long-term care, skilled nursing, and supportive services for older adults and people with disabilities or chronic illness who require ongoing assistance with health and daily living. They deliver continuous nursing care, rehabilitation, nutritional and social support, and management of complex and comorbid conditions, occupying a central place in the care of aging populations. Research in this setting addresses the clinical, nutritional, and infection-control challenges of long-term care, the well-being and functional status of residents, and the organization and quality of care, concerns brought into sharp relief by the COVID-19 pandemic. Themes include nutritional assessment and supplementation, antimicrobial resistance and infection management, dementia care, frailty and fracture risk, and the social dimensions of caring for older people. The peer-reviewed studies indexed under this topic examine vitamin D supplementation strategies in the elderly, virtual reality in dementia care, antibiotic resistance in older adults, hand-grip strength as a nutritional assessment tool in long-term care, depression and dementia, the care debate and pandemic care dynamics, sleep disturbances and hip fractures, and management of influenza outbreaks in long-term care facilities. Together they reflect investigation of long-term residential care spanning clinical management, nutrition, infection control, and the broader social context of caring for older and dependent populations.
