Overview

Nursing care is the direct and supportive practice through which nurses meet the physical, psychological, emotional, and social needs of patients, encompassing assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation alongside patient and family education and emotional support. It is delivered across acute, long-term, community, and home settings and is central to patient safety, recovery, comfort, and quality of life, integrating clinical skill with a holistic, person-centered orientation. Research on nursing care examines models and quality of care delivery, holistic and specialized practice, workforce factors that shape the care environment, and the management of particular patient populations and conditions. Themes include intensive and holistic care, quality-improvement frameworks, support during labor and childbirth, dementia care, and complementary and supportive interventions. The peer-reviewed studies indexed under this topic examine nurses working with unlicensed assistive personnel, holistic nursing practiced as intensive care, quality-improvement strategies in healthcare facilities using a structure-process-outcome model, support needs of women in early labor, complementary approaches to anxiety, contextual action theory in nursing, virtual reality in dementia care, and care of older patients. Together they reflect investigation of nursing care spanning its clinical delivery, quality and organization, holistic and supportive dimensions, and application to diverse patient groups, with direct relevance to the practice and improvement of patient-centered health care.
