Overview
Knowledge in nursing refers to the structured body of understanding that underpins safe, effective and accountable practice, together with the methods used to measure how fully practitioners and the communities they serve possess it. It spans several recognised forms: empirical knowledge derived from research evidence, theoretical knowledge that frames how nursing is conceptualised, and practical or experiential knowledge acquired at the bedside. Much applied research operationalises this construct through knowledge, attitude and practice studies, which quantify what nurses or patient groups know about a clinical issue and how that knowledge translates into behaviour. Representative investigations assess nurses' knowledge, attitudes and willingness regarding organ donation, and examine the determinants of health behaviour in the populations nurses educate, including the utilisation of nutrition services by pregnant women and beliefs and practices surrounding infant feeding and exclusive breastfeeding. Theoretical contributions, such as contextual action theory, clarify how knowledge is enacted within concrete, socially situated nursing encounters, while studies of nurses working with unlicensed assistive personnel highlight the knowledge required to delegate and supervise safely. Identifying gaps between what is known and what is practised guides curriculum design, continuing professional development and targeted patient education, ensuring that interventions are informed by accurate, current and culturally appropriate understanding.
