Opportunistic Pathogens

Opportunistic pathogens are microbes or other pathogens (e.g. viruses) that, under certain conditions, can cause illness in individuals with weakened immune systems. They are usually found in the environment and are harmless to healthy individuals. In certain conditions, such as when a person's immune system is weakened, these organisms can take advantage of the opportunity to cause disease. Opportunistic pathogens can cause a range of illnesses including pneumonia, skin and soft tissue infections, and bloodstream infections. Treatment for opportunistic infections is usually more complicated than for other types of infections due to the weakened immune system. Identifying and controlling opportunistic pathogens is important in order to prevent, diagnose, and treat illnesses associated with weakened immune systems.
