Legionella Pneumophila

Legionella pneumophila is a type of bacterium found in fresh water. It is the cause of Legionnaire's Disease, a severe form of pneumonia with high mortality rates. L. pneumophila is not typically found in healthy people, but can enter the lungs if a person is exposed to contaminated water droplets or aerosols. People who are at higher risk of contracting the disease include those with weakened immune systems, such as smokers, people with chronic respiratory illnesses, and the elderly. Early diagnosis and treatment with antibiotics is essential for successful treatment. To prevent the spread of Legionnaires’ Disease, it is important to maintain water systems in order to reduce the risk of the bacteria flourishing and spreading.
