Overview

Clinical pharmacology is a field of study focused on the safe and effective use of pharmaceutical drugs in humans. Its primary goal is to understand the effects of drugs on biological systems and how they relate to their therapeutic benefits. Clinical pharmacology involves the evaluation of pharmacokinetics (the movement of drugs within the body), pharmacodynamics (the action of drugs on living cells, tissues and organs), and toxicity. Through the use of laboratory studies and clinical trials, the clinician can assess the potential responses of an individual to a given drug and its side effects. Clinical pharmacology plays a vital role in drug development and is essential in ensuring the safe and effective use of medications.
