Overview

Burkholderia Cepacia Complex (BCC) is a group of closely related pathogenic bacterial species of the Burkholderia genus. It is of particular concern in medical and healthcare settings due to its association with severe pulmonary infections in patients with cystic fibrosis and other immunocompromised individuals. The ability of BCC bacteria to become antibiotic resistant and form biofilms makes it a particularly difficult infection to treat. BCC is also known to cause other types of infections such as wound, urinary tract and bloodstream infections, therefore preventive measures such as good hand hygiene, waste management, and infection control must be taken when dealing with BCC. As a result, BCC is an important pathogen to understand and manage in healthcare settings.
