Overview

Cellular structures are the organized physical components that make up a cell and carry out the processes essential to life. They include the plasma membrane that defines the cell boundary and regulates exchange with the environment, the cytoskeleton that provides shape and supports transport, and, in eukaryotes, membrane-bound organelles such as the nucleus, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, and others that compartmentalize specialized functions. Together with macromolecules including proteins and nucleic acids, these structures enable energy production, biosynthesis, signaling, division, and the maintenance of internal order. The form and condition of cellular structures reflect and determine cellular function: stress can alter membranes and organelles, gene-based interventions can modify their molecular machinery, and microscopy techniques such as scanning electron microscopy reveal their fine architecture in tissues and at biomaterial interfaces. Study of cellular structures underpins cell biology, physiology, pathology, and biotechnology, providing the basis for understanding how cells respond to environmental stress, how disease disrupts normal organization, and how engineered approaches act at the subcellular level. Sub-areas include membrane biology, organelle function, cytoskeletal dynamics, ultrastructural imaging, and the analysis of how cellular components change under physiological, pathological, and experimental conditions across plant, animal, and microbial systems.
