Overview
Eating disorders are a group of serious mental and physical illnesses that cause people to have an abnormal relationship with food. Symptoms can include an unhealthy preoccupation with body weight, an intense fear of gaining weight, extreme restriction of food, binge eating, and purging. Eating disorders can lead to serious physical, emotional, and social complications, and can even be life-threatening. Eating disorders are treatable, and early intervention is key to successful recovery. Treatment can help people gain a healthy relationship with food, body image, and self-esteem.
