Child and Adolescent Suicide
Child and adolescent suicide is a growing phenomenon, with devastating effects on individuals, families, and communities. Suicide is the second leading cause of death in children and adolescents ages 10-24 in the United States, and its incidence is increasing each year. It is a complex issue, with a variety of risk factors, including mental illness, trauma, family conflict, substance abuse, bullying, and access to firearms. Prevention efforts are necessary to reduce the incidence of suicide among children and adolescents, and include education, access to mental health services, and strategies to reduce access to lethal means. It is important to recognize warning signs of suicide and respond with compassion to those at risk. With appropriate interventions and support, suicide can be prevented and those affected by it can be supported in their recovery.
