Overview
Behavioral disorders are a group of conditions, often first arising in childhood and adolescence, characterised by persistent patterns of behaviour that disrupt emotional regulation, social functioning, and daily activities and that exceed what is developmentally expected. They include disorders such as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder, and behaviours associated with autism spectrum disorder, and they may overlap with mood, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive presentations. Features can include inattention, impulsivity, hyperactivity, aggression, defiance, and difficulties with attention, communication, and social interaction, frequently accompanied by problems at home and school. Their origins are multifactorial, reflecting genetic and neurodevelopmental vulnerability together with family, attachment, and environmental influences, and early identification supports better outcomes. Assessment relies on developmental history, behavioural observation, and validated measures, while management combines behavioural and psychosocial interventions, parent and school support, and, where indicated, pharmacotherapy. The articles collected here, drawn from Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, address feeding problems in children with autism spectrum disorders, the influence of maternal behaviour on attachment-related stress responses, impulse-control problems in neurological disease, and related work on cognition and behaviour. Recurring themes include neurodevelopmental and disruptive behaviour, the role of family and attachment, comorbidity, and assessment and intervention in young people. The topic sits within Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, developmental psychology, and behavioural health, where timely support can reduce long-term impairment.
