Overview

Adolescent mental health refers to the emotional, psychological, and social well-being of young people during the transition from childhood to adulthood, a developmental period marked by rapid physical, cognitive, and identity changes. Adolescence is a critical window in which many mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, and behavioral disorders, first emerge, and during which young people develop coping skills, self-concept, and patterns of relating to others that can shape later life. A range of influences contributes to adolescent mental health, including family dynamics, peer relationships, academic demands, social environment, and biological maturation, and protective factors such as supportive relationships and a coherent sense of identity can buffer against psychological difficulties. Research within Child and Adolescent Psychiatry examines how processes such as autobiographical memory and the formation of a stable life story contribute to identity development and may help guard against identity diffusion, aggressiveness, and depression in this age group. Because the period combines vulnerability with opportunity for intervention, early recognition and support are widely emphasized in the field. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to adolescent mental health and the developmental, psychological, and social factors that shape well-being during these formative years.
